Basketball games

I used to like basketball, but while being at Drake I have grown to love it! Why? Just because I can go to most of the games, it is free, I can go with my friends, and Drake has won its last few games (not today, we were winning the whole game, but at the end, we lost).
Last year in Madrid, I went to see a basketball game between Real Madrid and Granada. The game was not great and the stadium was not full. It was the first time I went to a professional basketball stadium and it was a good experience.
In November, I went to NY and one of my friends made a surprise for me. She bought tickets for a basketball game between Knicks and Bulls, it was at Madison Square Garden. It was just incredible. The stadium was crowded and the atmosphere was great. Just incredible!
In the last few games at Knapp Center, Drake men´s basketball played against Iowa, Northern Iowa, Missouri State and on Saturday they will play against Creighton.

Me gustaba el baloncesto, pero desde que estoy en Drake creo que me encanta. ¿Por qué? Simplemente porque puedo ir a la mayoría de los partidos, es gratis, puedo ir con mis amigos y Drake ha ganado la mayoría de los últimos partidos (hoy no, íbamos ganando todo el partido, pero al final, perdimos).
El año pasado en Madrid, yo fui a un partido de baloncesto entre el Real Madrid y el Granada. El partido no fue muy bueno y el estadio no estaba lleno. Pero fue la primera vez que fui a un partido profesional y fue una bonita experiencia.
En noviembre fui a Nueva York y una de mis amigas me hizo una sorpresa. Compró entradas para un partido de baloncesto entre los Knicks y los Chicago Bulls, en el Madison Square Garden. Fue increíble. El estadio estaba lleno y el ambiente era extraordinario. ¡Fue increíble!

Las últimas semanas en el Knapp Center, el equipo de baloncesto masculino de Drake jugó contra Iowa, Northern Iowa, Missouri y el sábado jugarán contra Creighton.

Working in campus

I have worked on campus since the first day I arrived at Drake. I first started working as a Spanish language partner for DULAP. In this program I met amazing people such as Jan Marston, Priscila Pipper, Clayton Mitchell and my students. I have discovered that I like teaching and learning American culture with them.
Then, I discovered The Times-Delphic paper, and I wrote some articles, and after the first stories, I am taking some pictures too. It was very difficult to write the first story, but now it is easier, and I will miss the paper when I go back home.
In December, I started to write this blog. I love blogging, and I think it is great to have this opportunity and to tell about my experiences. I have received very nice comments about it and a gift card to use at Mars Cafe.
This semester I have another job. I work at Meredith, the communications building, doing photocopies, taking mail, checking phone calls, etc. It is pretty easy, and when I have free time I can do my homework.
I need to save money to go to China, but also I would like to do more travels in the United States.

Desde el primer día que llegué a Drake estoy trabajando en el campus. Primero comencé trabajando como ayudante de español en el DULAP. En este programa he conocido a gente increíble como Jan Marston, Priscila Pipper, Clayton Mitchell, o mis estudiantes. He descubierto que me gusta enseñar y aprender sobre la cultura americana con mis estudiantes.
Después, descubrí el periódico The Times-Delphic, y escribí artículos, después de unos cuantos, ahora también hago fotos. Fue difícil escribir el primer, pero ahora es más fácil y echaré de menos el periódico el año que viene.
En diciembre comencé a escribir este blog. Me encanta bloggear y creo que es genial tener esta oportunidad y poder contar mis experiencias. He recibido comentarios muy amables sobre lo que estoy haciendo y una tarjeta de regalo para usar en Mars Café.
Y por último, este semestre tengo un nuevo trabajo. En Meredith, en el edificio de comunicación, hago fotocopias, reparto el correo, contesto al teléfono, etc. Es muy fácil y si tengo tiempo libre puedo hacer mis deberes.
Necesito ahorrar dinero para poder ir a China y también me gustaría poder hacer más viajes en Estados Unidos.

How the things are going

During the past few days, I have been very busy. On Sunday I went to Laura's recital at Sheslow Auditorium. Most of her family and friends were there and she sang very well.
I played scrabble in English with a Spanish friend. It could be better, but I think the result was ok.
Yesterday I changed the class JMC 91 to HNRS 98 Writing and Photography. I am not sure if it is the right decision, but I think I had too many writing classes, and in this new one, I have to read and watch movies.
And I have two stories that are very sad, and another very nice. I am going to start with the good ones: Penelope Cruz is nominated to the best Actress by the Cinema Academy.
The two sad stories are that my computer is broken and it does not work at all, and that Kapuscinski, one of my favorite journalist has died today.

Durante los últimos dias he estado muy ocupada. El domingo fui al recital de Laura en el auditorio Sheslow. Ella cantó muy bien y parte de su familia y amigos fue a verla.
Jugué al scrabble en inglés con una amiga española. Pudo haber estado mejor, pero creo que el resultado estuvo bien.
Ayer me cambié la clase JMC 91 por la clase HNRS 98 Escritura y fotografía. No estoy segura de la decisión, pero creo que tenía muchas clases de escritura, y con esta tengo que leer y ver películas.
Y tengo dos noticias que son muy tristes y otra buena. Voy a empezar con la buena: Penélope Cruz ha sido nominada al Oscar a la mejor actriz por su papel en Volver.
Las noticias tristes son que mi ordenador está estropeado y ha dejado de funcionar, y que Kapuscinski, uno de mis periodistas preferidos ha muerto hoy.

I miss Asturias

I miss Asturias, the nice weather, the mountains, the beaches, and the public transportation to go everywhere.
But I like Drake: the classes, the people and the teachers, Mars Cafe, the Knapp Center, the basketball games, or the weekends with French friends.
In the next weeks, I hope I can go to the Civic Center to see the "Phantom of the Opera." I am talking with some people to write a story for one of my classes about the backstage, and how the people organize everything.
Last year I wrote a story about musicals in Madrid and I had the opportunity of see the backstage of "Fame" and spend time with the actors while they were dressing and making up. And it was great.

Echo de menos Asturias, el buen tiempo, las montañas, las playas, y el transporte público para ir a todos los sitios.

Pero me gusta Drake: las clases, la gente y los profesores, Mars Cafe, el Knapp Center, los partidos de baloncesto, los fines de semana con mis amigas francesas, etc.
En los próximas semanas, espero poder ir al Civic Center a ver"El fantasma de la ópera". Estoy hablando con gente para poder escribir una noticia para una de mis clases, sobre el trabajo entre bastidores, y como la gente lo organiza todo.
El año pasado escribí una noticia sobre los musicales en Madrid y tuve la oportunidad de ver el trabajo entre bastidores de "Fama" y de estar tiempo con los actores mientras se vestían y se maquillaban. Y fue genial.

My classes for this semester

These are my classes for this semester: JMC 59 Intro to visual communication, JMC 91 Magazine staff writting, JMC 98 Reporting & writing for WWW, and JMC 119 Magazine publishing.
That's means I have 12 credits, but I need at least 15. I have to wait until February to know if the Summer Study Seminar to China is going to be carry out or not.
I love my classes for this semester. I have the opportunity of choose them from a big list, and finally I am in most of the courses I chose. I am a little bit sad because the two classes of ART 21 Digital Print Production were full and I could not register for them.
But then, I found the information about the Study Travel Seminar at China, so I can have the 15 credits I need for my university back at home.

Estas son mis clases para el siguiente semestre: JMC 59 Introducción a la comunicación visual, JMC 91 Escritura para revistas, JMC 98 Escritura de noticias y reportajes para Internet y JMC 119 Publicación de revistas.
Esto significa que tengo 12 créditos, pero necesito al menos 15. Tengo que esperar hasta febrero para saber si el viaje de estudio de verano a China se va a llevar a cabo o no.
Me encantan mis clases para este semestre. He tenido la oportunidad de elegir de una lista larga y finalmente estoy en la mayoría de los cursos que elegí. Estoy un poco triste porque las dos clases de ART 21 Producción de impresión digital estaban llenas y no me pude registrar para ellas.
Pero mas tarde, encontre información acerca del viaje de estudio de verano a China, así tendré los15 creditos que necesito para mi universidad en Espanna.

Back at Drake

I arrived at Drake on Monday afternoon. The planes were on time except the last one, between Chicago and Des Moines, which was delayed more than four hours.
Probably this was the longest travel for me ever. I started on Sunday, with a bus between my city and Madrid, I did not sleep during the night because I had to be at the airport at 4 a.m., and then I took three planes between Madrid and Frankfurt, Frankfurt and Chicago, and finally Chicago to Des Moines.
When I arrived at Carpenter Hall I saw some friends, but I went to bed soon because I was very tired.
Now I have a cold, and I am freezing. There is snow everywhere outside the buildings. Inside my dorm is warm and outside is freezing. I can not understand it.

Llegué a Drake el lunes por la tarde. Los aviones fueron puntuales excepto el último entre Chicago y Des Moines, que fue retrasado más de cuatro horas.
Probablemente, este ha sido mi viaje mas largo. Empecé el viaje el domingo en bus entre mi ciudad y Madrid. No dormí la noche del domingo porque tenía que estar en el aeropuerto a las cuatro de la madrugada, y luego cogí los tres aviones entre Madrid y Frankfurt, Frankfurt y Chicago y finalmente, entre Chicago y Des Moines.
Cuando llegué a la residencia Carpenter, vi a algunos de mis amigos, pero me fui para la cama enseguida porque estaba muy cansada.
Ahora tengo un resfriado y estoy congelada. Hay nieve por todas las partes fuera de los edificios. Y dentro de mi habitación hace mucho calor. No consigo entenderlo.

Back to Drake

In just three days I will be back at Drake. During these last days back at home I went to see a friend at Gijon, a city next to mine.
I went by train and I spent the time reading a book called "Laura y Julio." And I loved it. After our lunch, we went to the beach. The weather was nice, and we went to the sand, but the water was cold.
The next days I will be around my city, Oviedo. It is a city in the north of Spain and it is the capital of Asturias. I will spend time with my family and friends. I have a 50th wedding anniversary dinner and some parties before I go back to Drake.

En tres días estaré de vuelta en Drake. Durante estos tres días que me quedan en casa yo visité a una amiga en Gijón, una ciudad cercana a la mía.
Fui en tren y durante el trayecto terminé de leer el libro "Laura y Julio". Y me encantó. Después de la comida fuimos hasta la playa. Hacía buen tiempo y bajamos a la arena, pero el agua estaba fría.
El resto de los días estaré en mi ciudad, Oviedo. Es una ciudad en el norte de España y es la capital de Asturias. Pasaré tiempo con mi familia y mis amigos. Tengo que ir a una cena de celebración de 50 años de casados e iré a varias fiestas antes de regresar a Drake.
